The 1920s Egyptian Revival building in Buena Park that until recently housed Nick's Uptown bar and now belongs to Thorek Hospital has been granted preliminary landmark status by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks. Can't say we expected that one. The building, designed by Paul Gerhardt as a car showroom, also served as the Cairo Supper Club until 1964. Still to come: a public hearing; final commission vote; zoning board vote; and full council vote. In an infamous charade Old Prentice was granted the same momentary protection before a speedy revoke, but we doubt Thorek is as mobilized toward demolition as Northwestern. [DNAinfo, previously]
