57 Dominick's Stores Shuttered Over The Weekend: Now What?

On Saturday the Dominick's grocery chain finished itself off with the closure of 57 stores that remained unbought. Fifteen of the 72 stores the chain owned in the Chicago area are still opened but have adopted new identities (Four now call themselves Jewel and 11 are Mariano's.) A special task force was assigned by Mayor Rahm Emanuel to figure out what to do with all that vacant retail space earlier this month. At the time the Mayor proclaimed "I am confident we will find operators for stores in every market where there are not sufficient alternatives." Sounds like there might be serious work left. In the meantime, our friends at Racked take a look at what it means for competitors hoping to scoop up former Dominick's shoppers.
