For those readers who dutifully ventured North to a messy intersection sporting a "collision of architectural styles and building types", Montrose, Sheridan, and Broadway proved an intelligent bet. Given strong 1936 photo's visual cues like the occurrence of the word "Buena" and multiple viaducts (as one reader observed), we're not sure our hints regarding built form and neighborhood character even mattered. it did probably help to learn that the decorative 3-story building prominently featured in the vintage photo is still standing. Ten- and 12-story apartment blocks now stretch west of Broadway and a nasty 1980s Jewel plaza lurks just behind the camera.
