Charlie Trotter Dies; Michelin Bib Gourmand List Revealed; More

LINCOLN PARK—Charlie Trotter, perhaps the most iconic chef in the history of this city, suddenly passed away on Tuesday at the age of 54. A candlelight vigil happened, notables reacted on Twitter, chefs spoke of his influence, writers wrote about him, and we dug up an amazing old photograph and video. Details of an inoperable brain aneurysm also surfaced, although the autopsy was inconclusive.

CHICAGO—The Michelin Guide, the most ballyhooed guide to restaurants worldwide, revealed its 2014 list of Chicago Bib Gourmands—meant for those looking to dine on a budget. 21 new restaurants made the cut, 16 fell off; 69 total spots made the list.

HYDE PARK—Matthias Merges (Yusho, Billy Sunday), a 14-year former Charlie Trotter protege, opened his latest restaurant on Tuesday. A10 is bringing a needed dining option to the academics and assorted South Side folk in Hyde Park.

CHICAGO—This month's Heatmap dropped, using photos from Samsung watch and phone cameras. The Dawson, Chop Shop, Smalls, and Gogi are new to the list.
