Forgotten Architects: James F. Eppenstein

Maybe you remember the guy but Forgotten Chicago is working off a plausible assumption that most Chicagoans know next-to-nothing about early-20th Century architect and designer James F. Eppenstein, because few records exist. The versatile modernist, in a 30-year career, designed single-family homes, commuter trains, commercial buildings, and a wide range of interior work including a 1937 remodeling of the landmark Shoreland Hotel's common spaces. It was Eppenstein's remodeling and not the original interiors that Studio Gang referenced in their recent renovation of The Shoreland, now a Hyde Park apartment block. Read on!
