Pullman Wheelworks, a sprawling factory-turned-affordable housing complex, recently embarked on a rehab of units and common spaces after decades of physical decline. Mercy Housing Lakefront and National Housing Trust-Enterprise Preservation Corp. purchased the property in late 2011 and set the "rolling rehab" in motion with a pledge to keep almost all existing tenants onsite. How? By opening 15 full-amenity "hotel suites" in already-vacant units and cycling tenants through one month at a time. This innovative, considerate approach was a hit, reports LISC Chicago.
