Data centers might not be large employers, but they are building fillers— often of the vacant, industrial variety. Hence, with its retired warehouse inventory, Chicago is primed to meet the ever-larger spacial needs of data storage. It's already 5th on the national list of the largest data center markets. Urban Land Institute enumerates the city's advantages in hosting this economic stimulator, which include relatively low energy costs, available centrally-located real estate, and a scarcity of destructive natural disasters (knock on wood).
