The late Gary Comer, Lands' End founder, has a lot of stuff bearing his name these days. And it's pretty much all on the Far South Side. That's because the man was from a little place called Pocket Town in Greater Grand Crossing, overrun by crime and poverty since the 1970s. And because, in 1999, he embarked on a campaign to pump his immense private wealth into fixing his old elementary school and building Gary Comer College Prep as a charter alternative to South Shore High. Comer also got invested youth recreation (Comer Youth Center) and in affordable housing. Chicago Mag has more. [Chicago Mag]
