Archicritic Lynn Becker has dropped the gavel on what he sees as pressing architectural fixes in the New Year. Acknowledging that some fixes are too big to be given a firm deadline, Becker calls for some follow-through on the nagging pestilence of three downtown dysfunctions: the electrical substation at Lake & State; the Illinois Center's hidden upper plaza; and the former Lake Shore Athletic Club. Ideas are thus: spruce up the substation and add a pocket plaza; build a "stairway to heaven" that parades pedestrians through the Illinois Center plaza; and put a casino in the old Athletic Club building, if you must.
