In 2005 The Tribune's readers proclaimed the squat retail building at 16 W Jackson as Chicago's all-around ugliest. Certainly, for the number of eyes that fix on the two-story structure just west of State during a normal workday, it's ugliness should garner attention. But those days are done as a renovation, furnished by your tax dollars (as part of Federal Plaza), saw the structure's inherent nastiness blunted by black paint and a patterned facade. It's better, greener, but still a waste of space. [Chicago Architecture Blog, image: Google Maps]
