Wondering what's in store for the old Michael Reese Hospital site on the south side? As you may recall, some historic buildings on the sprawling 37-acre parcel were demolished to make way for the would-be 2016 Olympic Village (despite a mayoral pledge to preserve). But with a failed Olympic bid and payments on a $91 million loan about to come due, the city has commissioned Skidmore Owings & Merrill with the task of finding profitable uses for the site, which include a casino or Obama library. Local Ald. William Burns (4th) is hoping that whatever is built there will generate jobs for community members. According to Crain's, a portion of the price tag for the redevelopment could be borne by Bronzeville's TIF district fund, which has $21.5 million available in its coffers.
