Political Heft: Tackling the Homicide Rate

New, 12 comments

Everyone wants to know what'll be the next city initiative against rising violent crime. Even the Aldermen are getting antsy. Just today, Rahm has responded by announcing a board-em-up campaign to identify, secure, and potentially demolish roughly 200 abandoned structures, reports The Tribune. $4M has been set aside for the project which will target flagged buildings in Englewood, Ogden, Harrison, and Grand Crossing in the early going. Police Supt. Garry McCarthy notes that abandoned structures often serve as gang stash houses for guns and drugs. Chicago's murder rate is still 37% above where it was a year ago, so yeah, please try something. [Trib]
