Did you know there's only one single solitary drive-in movie theater left in the region? It's the Cascade in West Chicago, and it shows run-of-the-mill movies. John R. Schmidt revisits the history of the drive-in for WBEZ. Obviously, they surged across the nation when folks started buying cars en masse in the immediate Post-WWII years. And predictably, they hit the skids in the early 80s with the advent of the VCR and popularity of cable TV. In other words, making out got a lot easier and a lot more private. But the novelty of the drive-in must live on! And we have the Cascade to thank for that. [WBEZ, photo: flickr/Preservation Nation]
