Garbage Wars

In case holiday distractions caused you to miss it, The Tribune reported on Friday that the City of Chicago has lost a court case aimed at preventing the expansion of the River Bend Prairie Landfill into city territory on the far South Side. The implication—along with a loss of 86 acres—is that the city's moratorium on new or expanded landfills can no longer interfere with Land & Lakes' appetite for expansion at the Chicago/Dolton border. Land & Lakes filed the suit last April, which environmentalists and the city painted as an egregious affront to the best interests of the area's residents. The acreage is no longer within city limits, but state-level legislation now working its way through The House may extend the landfill ban to all of Cook County, effectively nullifying any expansion effort.
