On the Market

In today's Deal Estate column, Dennis Rodkin does a walk-through of Crate & Barrel founder Carole Segal's Winnetka mansion— newly listed for $6.499M. The home has been flipped—quite literally—so that the front has become the rear and the rear the front. The dizzying manipulations of architect Ralph D. Huszagh's 1936 construction were done largely for amusement and to broaden the home's footprint. It sits on 2.4 acres, so one hardly notices any loss of greenspace. For instance, a porch was made a huge living room and a three-car garage became a family room. Other alterations were made to promote a natural, tranquil setting. Bounce over to Chicago Mag for the photo gallery and video tour. [Deal Estate]
