Streetcar Desire

New, 11 comments

A new campaign was born last week: the Chicago Streetcar Renaissance. The alliance of transit dorks has a very noble and somewhat plausible goal in mind: to introduce streetcars to Clark Street between the Loop and Wrigley Field and eventually to the rest of the city. Says architect and founder John Krause: "Our mission is to grow the economy and the population of Chicago every year while reducing traffic congestion and making the city easier to get around." He hopes to recall the time when Chicago had the largest streetcar network in the world, adding that “the only way you can get rid of cars is to replace them with something better."
