Considerable numbers of homeless veterans will find housing over the next six months, in Cook County and across the nation, as HUD distributes new vouchers to local authorities. Cook County will receive $760,872 or the equivalent of 100 housing vouchers— a 55% increase over existing levels. As Richard Monochio, executive director of the Housing Authority of Cook County, tells Dennis Rodkin of Chicago Magazine: the vouchers subsidize private rentals up to 70% but also supply vets with counseling, job training, and placement services. Considering there are probably 2,000+ homeless vets statewide—many of them concentrated in the Chicago area—this is but a compassionate gesture, not a solution. [HUD via Chicago Mag]
