Here's a treat, folks. A large unit in the storied Headley Condominium building in Depaul/Lincoln Park is on the market for $849K. The Headley, built in 1875, is one of the city's oldest—if not the oldest—surviving public school buildings. Architect William Bauhs spoke of the school's overbuilt construction in a 1985 Tribune article, while undertaking the condo conversion. This unit doesn't have the enormous exposed timber beams and brackets of some neighboring units (they appear to be cloaked in drywall). Though it glosses over most of the old bones, one can still sense a solid fortress-like quality throughout. Measuring 2,700-square-feet with four beds and three baths, the lofted three-level unit has hardwood floors, tall windows, a new kitchen with marble counters, and a two-sided fireplace that brings the inferno to both living room and master suite. There's a private patio space plus a shared roof deck and yard. Taxes are $9,128; assessments unknown.
