Chicago River Boathouse Designs to be Unveiled

New, 16 comments

Center Square Journal is reporting that major brainstorming on new Chicago River boathouses has brought fruit to bear. Tomorrow evening at the River Park Fieldhouse at 5100 N Francisco Ave., prospective designs for the first of four recreational boat houses (two North, two South) will be unveiled. Under the tutelage of Jeanne Gang and Chris Lee, a group of IIT students has been leading the charge. A representative will be at the meeting to discuss the concepts. Each boat house will cost around $4M, partly funded by an EPA grant. Part of Mayor Rahm Emanuel's thrust to make the river the city's "next recreational frontier", other complementary projects involve completing bike trails and expanding park space. The boathouses will host kayak vendors, storage, and concessions. Expect your first crack at them sometime in 2013.
