Theaster Gates' Community Arts Model Goes Viral

You might remember local artist Theaster Gates for his pioneering working with the CHA to create a model for live-work affordable artist housing. That model will soon touch down in Grand Crossing as a 32-unit mixed-income public housing conversion just down the street from his earlier success, the Dorchester Projects. Along the way, Gates assembled a motley crew of artists, architects, developers, activists, and educators as the Rebuild Foundation, whose mission is to maintain existing projects and seek out new ones. Monday's article in Atlantic Cities tells of the transformational work that Rebuild is now doing at nine sites in St. Louis, Detroit, and Omaha. It's the only multi-city community arts and housing developer of its kind nationwide, all thanks to attention garnered in here in Chicago. [Atlantic Cities, previously]
