Home Improvements: A Personalized Roof Deck

Bored by the standard roof deck ensemble of patio sets and king size grills? Try unleashing a bit of French countryside (or Prairie for that matter). That's precisely what French ex-pat Stephane Rambaud did to the roof of his new Lincoln Park penthouse. Lisa Skolnik, writing for Chicago Magazine, looks at how Rambaud began with a 2,200-square-foot tarred expanse with protruding building mechanicals and ended with a lush garden with stone paths, a large hearth, porticoes, and a dining area. Luckily, the new building was of sturdy-enough construction to support the heaviest of acoutrements. Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects was hired to pull it off, with magazine-caliber results. File it away in your home improvements binder. [Chicago Mag]
