Preservation Watch: Push to Save Urban Farm

New, 27 comments

For a month or so now, Fourth Presbyterian has been wondering what to do with its Chicago Lights farm at 444 W Chicago Ave. The issue is money, for helping defray the $34M cost of the Church's ongoing Gold Coast expansion. Although it has yet to definitively state an intent to sell, a study was commissioned to determine the farm's importance to Cabrini neighbors and volunteers. Trustee Deborah Mitchell chaired the study, and, in the process developed feelings for the land. She is now spearheading a petition to save the farm and its community mission centered on job training for at-risk youth. Hundreds have signed to push for a fundraising option (they already have substantial pledged donations) over a quick sale to a developer. The Church has the final word. [Skyline, previously]
