Is the House transit bill dead? Signs point to yes. Speaker John Boehner has indicated his willingness to remove or alter the mass transit component of the Highway Bill. That's the part that threatened to boot mass transit from gas tax funding. Loss of a 20% share of the federal gas tax could cripple many local capital projects if they competed unsuccessfully for general funding, and drew the opposition of some local Republicans in addition to total opposition by House and Senate democrats. Whatever happens, no one in Washington wants to be perceived as buckling under pressure. And thus, the blame game rages on. [The Hill]
