It's easy to side with NIMBYs when the objectionable item is a casino. South Side homeowners are strongly denouncing any consideration of a new casino on the old Michael Reese hospital grounds in Douglas. The city and its team of development scouts, led by Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, has put a casino project on the table along with other more noble uses like an Obama Presidential Library or technology park. All are designed for job creation and as local magnets, but they're not created equal. A casino would produce the best short-term results, but also a big social and economic burden. The crowd at this week's development meeting erupted at every suggestion of a casino, so developers—and the city—are playing it cool for now. [DNAinfo, previously]
