Walgreens Flagship Open For Business

New, 13 comments

A lot of attention is being lavished on the latest Walgreens flagship store, which officially opens its doors today. Chicago Architecture Blog and our friends at Racked Chicago both toured the store, returning with plenty of photographic eye candy. And this ain't your typical Walgreens! It's located in the old Noel State Bank Building at Milwaukee/North/Damen, the vibrant nexus of Bucktown and Wicker Park. Architect Dan Garneau led the effort to resurrect the landmark flatiron building, which stood vacant for five years. The new store incorporates many of the building's original elements, an intricate skylight most dramatic among them. And in an ingenious bit of adaptive reuse, the old bank vault has been transformed into a "vitamin vault." With CVS' likeminded occupation of the bank building at Ashland and Division, could this be the start of a new drugstore trend? [Chicago Architecture Blog; Racked Chicago]
