The last time this seductive old Cook County Courthouse made the news, it was headed to a foreclosure auction along with an adjoining parcel. That spelled the end of Azure Tower— a 130-unit condo building planned for the empty parcel by Concept Developers, as well as lofts planned for the 1922 courthouse. Now, with the surfacing a renovation/alteration permit on Everyblock, it looks like the Courthouse may be in good hands. A scheme for 49 rental units with ground floor retail/office space would salvage this vacant colossus. The neighborhood blog Sloopin and probably most observers had written off the property as it got more and more dilapidated. The seven-story classical facade gives the derelict building its value. In 2006, Preservation Chicago went so far as to elevate the building to its "Chicago 7" most endangered list. But you gotta wonder what kind of karmic implications are involved in converting a domestic violence criminal court to residences. Anyone have a jump on renderings? We'd love to see 'em!
