George Maher's Erwin House Hits the Market for $1.8M

New, 2 comments

Set on a near half-acre lot in the Oak Park Estate District, George Maher's Charles R. Erwin House is a spectacle in an area with no shortage of them. Built in 1905 at the midpoint of Maher's career, the Erwin House is fundamentally a Prairie with influences of Frank Lloyd Wright, H.H. Richardson, and other contemporaries Maher worked with or admired. The Arts & Crafts movement too plays a minor role.

The house was renovated in 2004 and chosen as the American Society of Interior Designers' showcase house. It gets even more juicy. The Tribune's Bob Goldsborough discovered the home belongs to former Channel 5 news anchor Zoraida Sambolin, who is departing Chicago for CNN in New York. The 6-bed, 5-bath 8,000 sf home has gorgeous woodwork, an in-ground pool, pizza oven, and no less than three kid-themed bedrooms (You'll have to do a little excavating to find the architectural details). Sambolin paid an even $1M for the place in '04, according to Goldsborough, and she's now striving for $1.8M.
