20-Acre Nature Preserve Planned for Part of Rosehill Cemetery

New, 8 comments

Good news for nature lovers on the Northwest Side: Yesterday, Ald. Patrick J. O'Connor introduced an ordinance to the City Council that calls for the city to acquire 20.5 acres of wetlands and heavily-wooded land in Rosehill Cemetery. The land in question was never used by the cemetery, and the city would acquire it for $7.8 million, according to a city press release. TIF funds would then be used to dredge the pond, and the land would later be turned over to the Chicago Park District. Ultimately, new trails and viewing platforms would be added. The city expects to acquire the land in November, according to Ald. O'Connor's website, and the new nature preserve will open in 2013.
