Six New Museums and Cultural Buildings in Chicago

New, 1 comment

As Vince Michael pointed out on his blog recently, hospitals and universities are "the ONLY builders nowadays." That's a minor exaggeration, but it is true that large institutions are among the only players with enough power to see major construction projects through in recent years, and they've added some interesting new buildings to Chicago's urban landscape. Work was recently completed on Jeanne Gang's colorful Media Production Center at Columbia College. A couple of weeks ago, students and faculty got a first look at the interior of the new Helmut Jahn-designed Mansueto Library. And on Thursday, DePaul held an official groundbreaking for its new Pelli Clarke Pelli-designed theater building in Lincoln Park. Here's a list of six other cultural buildings, mostly by lesser-known architects than the three heavyweights just mentioned, that are either under construction or (in the case of the new DePaul Art Museum) recently finished.
