Ever wonder why hundreds of coin-operated parking meters line the empty streets on the Near West Side, between Roosevelt, Ashland, 15th Pl, and Damen? According to the Gazette, the city spent roughly $625,000 to install over 1,000 meters on vacant land, in hopes of cashing in on Medical District employees who wanted to park there (who, presumably, would jog a half-mile every few hours to feed the meter). Now, with Costco taking over the land, the meters will have to be removed. How much revenue will the city lose from ripping out the meters? According to a Medical District spokesman, "The figure came to $0." [Gazette Chicago]
