DePaul To Break Ground on Fancy New Theatre School Building

New, 2 comments

Big news in Lincoln Park: DePaul is holding a groundbreaking ceremony this afternoon for the new Theatre School building at Fullerton and Racine. "What's the big deal?" you say. Well, for one, the $69-million building is designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli, the architecture firm behind the Petronas Towers in Malaysia. Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin likens the rendering to an upside-down wedding cake, and he notes that bringing in Pelli Clarke Pelli is quite a departure from DePaul's standard practice of hiring local architect Joe Antunovich to design campus buildings. "DePaul is known for reaching out to the community and our design supports this objective," said architect Cesar Pelli, quoted in a press release. Pelli is set to speak at the ceremony, which is at 4:30. The building is expected to be completed in about two years.
