The City Council recently approved a hefty tax break for the super-sized wholesaler, but now 9th Ward Ald. Anthony Beale, chairman of the City Council's Transportation Committee, is standing in the way of the deal. The land slated for the city's second Costco at 14th and Ashland is within the boundaries of the Illinois Medical District, meaning that $1M in rent will go to the nonprofit Medical District — not the city. Beale isn't thrilled about that. "The city giving away land and someone [else] profiting is totally unacceptable at a time when we're having huge budget deficits," said Beale. Construction on the store isn't set to begin until next year. [Sun-Times]
