Will Studio Gang's 'Best Nest' Design Ever Take Flight?

Sad news: The Sun-Times reports that due to cost overruns, Jeanne Gang's signature Ford Calumet Environmental Center in Hegewisch Marsh may never be built. The carbon-neutral structure, dubbed the 'Best Nest' because it was modeled after bird's nest-making process, was to be constructed of salvaged steel, rebar, slag and glass bottles. When plans for the 27,000-square-foot structure were unveiled in 2004, construction costs were pegged at $7.6 million, but estimates have since more than tripled. Now, the Department of Environment tells the Sun-Times that the ambitious design will either be scaled back or scrapped altogether.
