Theaster Gates seems like a very cool guy. When the housing market crashed, the Chicago artist-musician recognized an opportunity and started purchasing boarded-up buildings along Dorchester Avenue in Grand Crossing, where he plans to create an arts community. He currently lives in an old candy store, which he rehabbed, and he's working on creating an art history library, a soul food pavilion and housing for artists. Go to Gates' website to see photos of his various projects. [WBEZ]
