Another Master Plan: UNO's Soccer-Centric Vision for Gage Park

The Lakeview Area Master Plan has received a bunch of attention this week, because it's new and it covers one of the North Side's most popular neighborhoods. Lakeview isn't the only Chicago community where people are thinking big, though. In the Southwest Side neighborhood of Gage Park, the charter school operator United Neighborhood Organization Charter School Network (UNO) recently released a master plan of its own. The plan, which was drawn up by STL Architects, calls for redeveloping vacant lots along 51st Street and St. Louis Avenue and building a new civic center, an elementary school, a high school, a soccer stadium, a soccer academy, senior housing, and a public plaza. Like the Lakeview plan, UNO's Gage Park plan includes a lot of green space, but instead of community gardens and a 'low line,' it focuses on a favorite Latin American pastime: soccer. Plans call for a modern soccer stadium, indoor and outdoor fields, training facilities, and soccer academy residences. Work is currently underway on the elementary school, which is designed by Juan Moreno Architects.
