Five-Screen Cinema Set to Open in Harper Theater

New, 3 comments

New housing, retail, and now entertainment for Hyde Park? Yep, this is really happening. Last month, the University of Chicago announced that renovations had begun on Harper Theater; now, the university says they've found a movie operator. According to a press release, The New 400 Theaters, an independent movie operator that currently runs a four-screen theater in Rogers Park, will open five screens in the 10,149-square-foot building. The theater is set to open in fall 2012, and it'll feature "a mix of art, children's and wide-release films," per the release. The move comes a little over a month after the university announced that it would renovate the commercial buildings adjacent to Harper Theater and bring a Five Guys burger joint to one of the storefronts. The news didn't escape the myopic gaze of SkyscraperCity's spyguy, who got his hands on a very pastel rendering of 53rd and Harper:
