Who cares about a funky old Holabird, Root & Burgee-designed storefront on State Street? Blair Kamin, that's who. NYC-based Thor Equities wants to remove the recessed entryway so they can fit more tenants in, promising a "simple, timeless, clean" (read: dull, characterless, forgettable) makeover. The Tribune architecture critic sounds the alarm, warning that, "city streets should not ape the numbing sameness of a shopping mall or suburban lifestyle center." Lynn Becker agrees. [Cityscapes]
