"It's the food chain of cities and regions. Chicago loses it's talent to NYC and Detroit loses it's talent to Chicago. The midwest as a whole is essentially losing this battle as it is the hardest hit region from globalization. Even though we export more goods for more money our efficiency is too great to support the population via manufacturing. Even white collar services are becoming less "labor" intensive.
