Chicago Home & Garden waxes poetic over a 4,000 sf condo in the old Marshall Field Jr. mansion on Prairie Ave. It's not for sale or anything, but has been transformed by a wholesale restoration and a host of flashy decorating decisions. Vacant and run-down for many years, a developer breathed new life into the 30,000 sf mansion in 2003, converting it into six condos. The largest and last to sell is this featured unit. When bought it was a blank slate, and it was important to the new owners to preserve the handiwork of Daniel Burnham, who performed the initial expansion from house to mansion in the 1890's. The modern elements were treated as installations that differed greatly from the historical elements. Home & Garden lists the designers for those inclined toward the fancy. [Chicago Home & Garden]
