The Curbed Cup, Curbed Chicago's annual Neighborhood of the Year tournament, continues today with a matchup of semifinalists, proud victors over their first round opponents. Voting for each matchup will close in the wee hours of the following day. Let the eliminations begin!
Perpetrator of another first round trouncing, second-seeded Lincoln Square is looking pretty strong right now, both for its very tangible 2011 happenings and its high standing among our readership. Lincoln Square benefits from a strong identity, and is adding shops, restaurants, and gyms left and right. It's yet to be seen what balance of old and new will settle in. Will its 'village center' appeal carry it across the finish line? It's gotta make it there first.
Last round, West Lakeview took on sleepier, grubbier Avondale, and won handily. There are more similarities in character between 'hoods this time around. Without any real grit and grime to sentimentalize over, it's down to whether you fancy living near celebrities, whether baseball trumps musical institutions, and if you generally feel one 'hood is heading in a better direction than the other.
