Vancouver, perhaps more than any other North American city, has achieved a break down of old left-right divisions over urban planning. The consensus: More walking, less driving. Partly, this is driven by a Canada-wide anti-obesity campaign much like our own, and partly it's planning for the doubling of Vancouver's senior population by 2025, where walkability means nothing less than independence. The Globe and Mail goes further into the land-use planning initiatives that are making Vancouver one of the healthiest cities in the world, such as "EcoDensity" which brings more intensive zoning to existing single-family neighborhoods.
