Foes of Public Housing (Museum)

New, 3 comments

On the 1300 block of Taylor Street, the last remaining piece of the Jane Addams Homes awaits its transformation into the National Public Housing Museum. Pending sufficient funding, the CHA will construct the museum sometime next year. Plans have been in the works since 2006, but community groups like the University Village Association cried foul when presented with the modern design. They claim the bright, glassy curtain wall and overall use of the old structure is insensitive to the history of the site. The Jane Addams Homes were the first public housing in Chicago, built under the PWA in 1938. The last remnant of the development has been a vacant eyesore in the neighborhood since 2002. Will new delays set in? We'll know soon enough. [Chicago Talks]
