Death of the Independents

Just as some of our old distressed theaters are looking to come out of retirement, like The Esquire and The Uptown, another is about to shutter. The Skokie Theater, which failed to attract a buyer over the course of a year and failed to meet its costs, will close. The 1912 movie house was the production site of some early silent films and, according to the Sun-Times, is one of the oldest buildings in Skokie, and the first to have air conditioning. Fully restored in recent years, let's hope it retains some kind of purpose. [Sun-Times]
