Theaster Gates looks at "The Creative Class" differently than Richard Florida. As a pioneer in artist live/work conversions on the south side, he sees a "creative class" in need of supportive services and space in which to thrive, not an upwardly mobile, highly-employable bunch of techies. Now, word is out that Gates has partnered with the CHA to bring 32 more units to South Dorchester Ave, the same strip that boasts his earlier successes. The breakdown will be one-third public, one-third affordable, and one-third market rate. There will be a shared workspace and volunteer programs for youth, and artists interested in working with the community will be aggressively recruited. [WBEZ]
