The City of Chicago announced yesterday that ground has been broken on the new intermodal facility at O'Hare International Airport. The nine-level, 4.5-million-square-foot facility will sit on a 33-acre site at the northeast corner of the airport, near the intersection of Mannhemin and Zemke roads, and combine car rentals, public parking, and airport transit system (ATS) connections in a single facility, which is being constructed as part of a larger, $782 million capital improvement project at O'Hare. Over 4,200 rental spaces will be included in the facility, alongside 2,600 public parking spaces, and the site will also include ample green features, such as native landscaping and a green roof. With construction led by an Austin Commercial in a joint venture with Power Construction and Ujamaa Construction, the project is expected to ease traffic congestion and promote efficiency for passengers at the airport, with an estimated 30,000 daily patrons expected to make use of the facility. Additionally, Parsons Construction Group was awarded a contract at the beginning of this month to begin modernizing the ATS, which will upgrade from 15 to 36 rail cars and extend the ATS track from its existing terminus at Economy Parking Lot E to connect with the new intermodal facility, expected to be completed in 2018.
The construction of the new intermodal facility is one of the largest projects seen at O'Hare, and is expected to generate nearly 3,000 design and construction jobs, and around 100 permanent jobs after completion. And in addition to a $288.1 million TIFIA Loan, the project is receiving funding from General Airport Revenue Bonds ($95.6 million), Customer Facility Charge Senior Lien Revenue Bonds ($250.5 million), Airport Development Funds ($62.4 million), and various other sources.
