A new Whole Foods distribution hub—and at least 150 jobs—is headed to Pullman after receiving a construction permit. Currently a vacant 17-acre site situated along the 700 block of E. 111th Street, the 140,000-square-foot development will be able to accommodate both dry and refrigerated storage needs. It is expected to open in 2018 and will serve up to 70 Whole Foods stores in the Midwest and Canada.
The upscale grocery chain is making the move from a 100,000-square-foot facility in Munster, Indiana to the far south side neighborhood thanks in part to Tax Increment Financing (TIF). The company’s request for $7.4 million in subsidies was approved by the city of Chicago’s Finance Committee in mid 2016.
The project—along with the $30 million Method factory—is an encouraging sign for Pullman which has been slowly recovering from many industries leaving the area. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, 9th Ward Alderman Anthony Beale, and company officials were on-site for a ceremonial ground-breaking back in July. With the issuance of a building permit, construction is finally ready to begin for real.
